I'm curious, however, what the value of this "Placeholders" feature
is, and how one would use it.
People on other forums have raved about it to me, but they never
explained that the placeholder(s) needed to be replaced before Build
and Go. I'm just wondering what the process would be (and the
potential value for leaving the preference on and using this feature).
Placeholders serve to remind you of the type, and maybe a little extra
description, of the parameters a method takes. When you complete a
method name, Xcode positions you so that the next thing you type will
replace the first placeholder. You'd type in a variable name,
constant, or other expression that you want to pass for that parameter.
You can advance to the next placeholder by pressing control-/ (at
least on my copy of Xcode; I may have customized it). See the "Select
Next Placeholder" command in the Edit menu.
