Setting fixed height of NSTextView in IB

I need to layout an NSTextView instance in a view. I don't want this text view to be scrollable, and so have removed it from being embedded in the Scroll View that it was in. When I view the size attributes of the Text View in the Inspector, I can't set the Frame dimensions (they are grayed out). Why is this? I also can not adjust the vertical size of the NSTextView in the view where it is placed, as I am not presented with any "handles" to do so when the Text View is selected. I can however set the frame programmatically in the -awakeFromNib when the Nib is instantiated, so the size can be controlled. Is there a way to set initial sizes in IB? (I have tried limiting the Max Height attribute, but this hasn't helped.
