Recognizing new document icons

  • Thread-topic: Recognizing new document icons

I am working on an application which is about to be released in a major new
revision. We are updating the application icon and the document icon to
coincide with this. Changing these icons is relatively easy, and associating
our document type (we'll call it .xyz) is also straight forward.

The problem I face is that it is not clear how to get the new document icon
to appear correctly for all of our previous users. Past users appear to have
the old document icon for .xyz documents cached, and the only way I have
determined how to remove the old document icon from the cache is to run an
invasive third-party application that wipes out the cache. This is far more
invasive than I would like to ask of the end-user in order to allow them to
see the new document icon.

Does anybody know how to deal with this within the application itself? Or
should I expect that the new document icon will be recognized after some
period of time?

Thanks,

Scott
