Referring to files in DERIVED_FILE_DIR (re: Run Script Phases)

The default value which Xcode inserts for Output Files for Run Script phases is

	$(DERIVED_FILE_DIR)/myfile

See also: http://emberapp.com/jimcorreia/images/run-script-phase-for-scriptphase-info

Is this a tacit recommendation that this is where I should put my derived/intermediate files?

I'm happy to put them there. But I also need to refer to them in the Xcode project, but there doesn't appear to be a relative root from which I can do so. Am I missing something?
