Validating a form

I've done a good bit of searching, and can't really seem to find what I'm after. What I want to do is have a sheet in an app that prompts for user input. On this sheet a certain number of fields are required. If the fields are populated, the OK button is enabled. If not, only the cancel button.
The delegate methods of these fields, and NSFormatter subclasses don't really work; they are all keyed of a user leaving or modifying a particular field. They do not give the ability to mark a field as required. I thought of using the windowShouldClose: method, but I'd prefer to disable the O.K. button.
So that leaves binding the buttons enabled state to a validate method on the delegate for the window. But this seems somehow wrong to me. Are there other ways of accomplishing this? A valid: (or some-such) method on each UI component would be great.
