Version string formats

  • Subject: Version string formats

The "Information Property List Key Reference" says that CFBundleVersion should be "one or more period-separated integers" and CFBundleShortVersionString should be "a string comprised of three period-separated integers". I had been assuming that since we got rid of 'vers' resources, a version could be whatever you wanted, like "2.8.1.33b19 (demo)". Are there really any negative consequences to using something other than period-separated integers in version strings?

By the way, the doc says that CFBundleShortVersionString can be localized, which would seem pointless if it must be three period-separated integers.
