Embedded Editor

Is there any way to ask XCode to NEVER open a file in the embedded editor in the project window?

I'd like to always open files in a "separate editor".

If Xcode has opened a file in an embedded editor window, is there any way to dismiss that file from the embedded editor, but still leave the file open in a separate editor? It used to be the case that Cmd-Shift- W would do that, but in later builds of XCode that seems to be closing both the version of the document in the embedded editor, and the separate version in an external editor.

Scott
