What's the setting of the Open Counterparts in Same Window checkbox in Preferences > Editing ?

I have an Xcode (3.1.3) window in that odd state where it's ungrouped, but
clicking the button to switch between header/implementation opens the other
file in the same window instead of the current one. Clicking
grouped/ungrouped back and forth doesn't fix the behavior.

Any data I can gather for a better bug report before I quit and re- launch
Xcode?
