On my machine, my sample project reproduces the hang with near 100% reliability. Coincidentally, it's the same sample project I submitted for < rdar://problem/7898146> Xcode 3.2.2 REGRESSION: can't debug embedded framework. Perhaps the two bugs are related in some way.

I experience this problem both on my work computer and on my computer at home. Activity Monitor shows little or know a CPU usage for Xcode during the hang. Xcode simply stops responding and the mouse pointer becomes a spinning wheel. The hang is particularly annoying because I need to clean when updating the data model so I get the right version.
This is an interaction between Xcode and Mac OS X File System Events that neither team has been able to nail down. We know about it and we're working on it. Our experience is that quitting Xcode and restarting usually alleviates the problem in the short term.
If anybody has a good reproduction scenario to transition from "doesn't hang" to "now it hangs" reliably, please post here and file a bug at crashreporter.apple.com. We too see this occasionally, but we don't have a way to force it to happen in a way that lets us diagnose and fix it.
