In the category of better late than never, here's what I do.

For quick scripts I use TextMate. It hasn't been updated in quite a while, the developer got caught in a Netscape style rewrite. IMHO BBEdit has a fatal flaw in that when you run a script the whole programs goes modal and doesn't let you edit anything in any window. I have reported this to BareBones and have talked to them at WWDC. Every major release I check this problem and it still exists.

For more complex scripts I use Eclipse, even though I despise using Java apps, with the Pydev plugin. http://pydev.org/ This gives you a full debugger which is awesome for free. The price you pay is the slightly steep learning curve of setting up Eclipse projects.
