And is one of the reasons why -[NSThread setName:] doesn't imply pthread_setname_np, since the former can be called on any NSThread while the latter cannot.

I suggest filing a bug report about pthread_setname_np asking for a variant that works on any pthread_t.  I don't recall off hand if there's a reason why that would be problematic, but it's worth raising the issue in any case.
