Hello Ben,
I assume the 'R' you are interested in is the OSS rendering of S, the statistics programming language..
It's probably a little bit on a side way to Mac development, even if R shines on Macs! So I wonder if it will be ever a target for the mainstream of the Mac community.
I would go for either TextMate or BBEdit (or the free and very good TextWrangler, from the same house) and see if one of the many third party language extensions could help you.
