True but it's been up to the job of running Xcode until recently. The
speed is adequate for my needs so long as kernel_task isn't starving
out Xcode for CPU cycles.

It wasn't that; I usually keep Activity Monitor open and I would have
noticed the network traffic leading up to the install.
