Compiling the PPC code using gcc 4.0 does, in fact, solve the
problem. All applications now build a 'ppc' architecture.
To date, no one I've discussed this with has any clear idea why this
happens.
I came across this issue a while ago with our stuff. I believe it's a
bug in the tools. If I remember rightly, I've worked around the
problem by using the force CPU subtype compiler flag.
