Is it not the one singularly most important fact to have come out of HCI
research that people and the environments they work in are highly
idiosyncratic? Is that not the reason why HCI design is hard? Is that
not why good designers design their websites to be seen on a wide
variety of machines with different screen sizes and for a large variety
of font types and sizes. Is that not also the reason why modern teaching
techniques are learner centred, to take account of each person’s
different environment and way of dealing with the world?
Now Apple has gone and produced a tool which from these missives looks
like a one size fits all. Perhaps this is a generational thing. Perhaps
the new generation of designers has forgotten the lessons of the past
and thus revisits that past upon us. One size fits all is bad design.
I have deferred moving over to XCode 4 because I dread working in a
single window and will not do so until I absolutely have to.
