Sharing API docsets between Xcode 3 and 4

I need to save some space on my old MacBook by reusing the same API docsets for Xcode 3 and 4 - none of

- setting a symlink in  /Xcode3/Documentation/ to  /Library/Developer/Documentation/DocSets
- using an alias

worked. Has anybody a working suggestion?
