Correct; but what you can do is stick an appropriately transparent area'd .png in a UIImageView on top of it and mark said view as user interaction disabled.

I've done that to only let the height I wanted show through to give the impression of a smaller picker, it works rather well once you fool with the displayed font sizes a bit.

That's also a good way to make the selection area frame look like it actually suits your app's UI.
