Most of the time - that approach works ... but sometimes I need to de-clutter the XIB.
Sometimes the XIB might be loaded with transient error messages or failure dialogs and I just want to quickly see what particular control will look like in isolation. Maybe there is a better way to do that but I'm also afraid of committing 'hidden changes' to the XIB ... so I tend to leave it alone whenever possible.

To address your root problem… can you not select the view you're interested in in the outline view (see the tiny disclosure widget at the lower-right corner of the sidebar)?
