FWIW, your code can be rewritten a bit more succinctly:
tell application id "com.apple.dt.Xcode"
set my_document to text document 1 whose name ends with (word -1 of (get
name of window 1))
end tell
But your basic argument holds: it's a mess. It looks like the fact that
anything works is luck rather than intention.
