Hey 4.2 Xcoders,
I don't mean to stoke any flames or nerves but I'd love to hear if anyone here has found a way to overcome the following UI issue in Xocde. Suppose a tab opens with say foo.cpp with its counterpart foo.h on the right-hand side. As it stands now, command-clicking on a symbol in foo.cpp will cause that editor pane to jump to that location (or similar, depending on the xcode prefs). So if that symbol is in bar.cpp, I now have a tab entitled "foo.cpp" who's left hand side is editing bar.cpp and right hand side is editing bar.h. Repeat that a few times and come back to your desk after a lunch break and, staring at xcode, i'll see a dozen tabs and half of them are titled "foo.cpp" and each one contains an editor open to whatever random file was edited last (and rarely foo.cpp). I'm no UI designer, but it doesn't seem to make sense (a) to allow navigation such that the tab title is effectively meaningless and (b) to have xcode always open a new tab when the file is being edited in another tab. This is source code editing, not web browsing, right?
Is there a way to make Xcode not 'leave' the file and its counterpart that the tab says that it's editing? Is there a way so that if navigation is jumping to a file that is already open in another tab that that tab is brought to the foreground instead (rather than another new one always being opened). Am I missing why the basic editor behavior from Xcode 3 isn't also available via prefs?
Unfortunately, my attempts install and use xcode 3 alongside xcode 4 on my 10.7 machine have resulted in only problems (and plus who wants to give up all the great stuff added in xcode 4).
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated -- thanks in advance!
Andy
