(I would phrase it like this: Chatting on the mailing list is a good way for users to figure things out, including if something that they're seeing is a bug or not, if it's known or not and if there are any workarounds, but it is not a substitute for filing a formal bug report via the Apple Bug Reporter. In the end, that will always be necessary for any issues / suggestions that you want us to take a look at).

All good suggestions. In addition I'd like to add that when we are nearing the release of a major new version - as of now that would be Xcode 4 - it makes a lot of sense to check and see if your problem still reproduces in the upcoming version before filing the bug report. That's not a requirement of course - You should always feel free to just report anything to us via the Apple Bug Reporter - But it is appreciated.
