Find terms "carry over" between apps

I realize this isn't directly an Xcode question so much as an OS X question, but I find it particularly relevant to my coding practices, so...
Many applications in OS X seem to share a global "find" term. For example, if you do a "find" in Terminal for "foo", switch to TextEdit, do a find for "bar", switch back to Terminal and do another "find", it will be filled in with "bar", not "foo". Likewise, if you switch back to Terminal and simply do a "find next" without even opening the find interface, it searches for "bar".
This also happens with Xcode. In fact, as far as I can tell, it happens with any app written by Apple.
Someone somewhere thought this was a really clever. I can't vouch for what other people find most productive, but this "feature" greatly impedes my workflow; I must constantly reenter my search terms instead of just Cmd-Keying "find next".
Please tell me there is a way to change this behavior. I haven't found anything relevant yet.
Thank you.

isn't it, and what's it seems weird and scary to me."
