add file to project symbol not found

I was having a problem with a symbol that existed in a lib not being found during link
So, since the lib was only 2 files I added those files to the project to hopefully get around the link error.
Surprise ... with the files compiled with the app I still get symbol not found during link !
The source file is there, it does get compiled so how can this be?
