I took the MacBook to the Apple Store, and the technician ended up
reinstalling 10.6.3. He did not wipe, so I did not have to do a
restore.
The technician tried to fix by installing "Mac OS X Combined Update
10.6.7" (failed), and then "Mac OS X Combined Update 10.6.8" (failed).
I believe the 10.6.3 [re]install was a punt.
I do have some backups - I back up iTunes purchases on occasion, and
keep my source code in a local SVN server (running on a different
machine). It pretty much covers the things I value.
