Basically, if there isn't enough room on your computer's internal drive, you were *already* in a certain amount of trouble; you just hadn't noticed it yet.
However, there shouldn't be any difficulty; you can move the installer onto an external drive and install from there. In addition, you can install *onto* the external drive, so that the installation will take up about 10GB on the external drive and only about 600MB on your internal drive (for the command-line tools etc.). This is a nice way to do the installation initially, allowing you to try out Xcode 4 without stressing over the space on your internal drive. Later you can clear some space and install it onto the internal drive if you want to. m.
