You absolutely can keep older copies of Xcode around. Just rename your old /Developer folder before installing Xcode 4. Xcode is "self contained" in the folder that it's installed into, for this specific reason. This has been true since Xcode 2.5.

Or pick a new folder for Xcode 4 in the Installer. Click on "Location" when the list of installation components is shown.
