Actually, I would take issue with this statement (specifically "much" improved).

When you are in the column'd view, take a look at the size of the dialog it lets you edit pathnames in (in my case, it was the custom framework search path).

The popup window is constrained to the width of the column, and has no resize controls.

I can't believe the column'd view was tested on anything but trivial projects.
