It was my careless error in typing "control-e" etc. when I should have written "command-e" etc. My fingers and I really do know the difference.
My substantive error was that I totally forgot about the "Show find options" that is available where the search term is displayed at the the right end of the area above the the editor when some text is selected and then command-e is hit followed by command-f, and which, when used, allows "match search term" to be chosen from a popup menu titled "Hits must". So yes, Xcode 4 does work just like Xcode 3.
My apologies for creating noise on the list, and thanks to those who offered help. (It's late; hope I've not screwed up something else in the above.)
