This led me to experiment with the Xcode 4 windows a little more and I made an interesting discovery. I don't know if others have found this or not, yet.
Previous posts have complained about the large minimum size of an Xcode 4 window. I believe this is due to keeping the full toolbar visible and functional; at least it is for me. But, hide the toolbar (i.e. click the pill at the right end of the title bar) and now you can resize the window to be narrower than with the toolbar. This will be very helpful for me. Yes, double clicking a file gave me a narrower toolbar-less window, but now I understand how to make that window myself.
Since I have no serious projects at this time, I have time and willingness to work with Xcode 4 and try to massage it into my workflow better, without losing productivity. My personal frustration is that I don't know, yet, all the techniques for massaging Xcode 4. Just now learning how to make a narrower window helps, I just wish I could split the window . . . um, hang on, I just had a thought.
Ok, I can split the narrow window. Click the pill to retrieve the toolbar. Click the Assistant Editor button to split the window. Click the pill to hide the toolbar. Resize the window narrow, again. Yeah, it works. Kind of cumbersome to get there (compared to clicking the split button in Xcode 3), but I finally put the pieces together to get there.
If you say that Xcode 4 is flexible, I'll take your word for it. My frustration is figuring out how to make it flex.
