There is a Shared documentation directory but it appears to work only for third-party doc-sets. When I tried to move the iOS 4.3 doc-set to that directory, neither XCode 3.2.6 nor 4.0 saw it, even though they both see some 3rd party doc-sets I have installed in that directory.
The symlink is a neat idea but I'm concerned about having to redo those easily-forgotten things when the next update comes along.
