How can I redirect the file in the xcode project to the file in the new location. I know I could remove all the files and add them back again but there must be an easier way to do this.

But quite frankly, when you want to do this for multiple files, I think the simplest way is as you describe, which you can do for more than one file at a time (drop the files on the project window.)

However, if you move a bunch of files to the same location, you can select all those files in the projects, then do "Get Info" and there, change the path of all the files to the new folder where you moved the files. Xcode will setup the path for all the selected files at once. This is valid with Xcode 3.2.6.
