Newbie xCode 4 issue.

| I previously spent all my time in xCode 3 and now using 4, I'm feeling more lost than I feel comfortable with.
All too often, for some reason, the app that the project is supposed to build is in red and the scheme popup lists the device in gray.
I have no idea why, nor can I find any text pointing me to why the app builds, but will not create the executable.
I'm on 10.6.8 and xcode_4.0.1_and_ios_sdk_4.3
And I the iOS app has iOS 4.0 for the minimum SDK. So I change it to 4.3 in the build info settings. Doesn't matter. I can't select a non grayed out device in the Scheme popup and the Product name is still red.
Any idea what little unmentioned trick is required to actually be able to build the app and create the file so I can see it in the simulator?
Thanks. xCode 4 is not the most intuitive thing on the planet.
