Extracting Currently Selected Text

Hi All,

Apps like Accessorizer are able to interact with/capture the currently selected text in Xcode to do something with it. Curious what the best way is to accomplish something like that… Clipboard? AppleScript? Some other kung-fu I'm not thinking of?
