I can silence the warning by adding this line to the didLaunch code:

  self.window.rootViewController = [[UIViewController alloc] init]; // no leak under ARC

It isn't pretty and hasn't much point, but it's good enough to remove the warning. This allows me once again to use the Empty Application template to demonstrate language features where no nib is needed. m.
