Cannot use Emoji keyboard in Simulator

I'm trying to test something related to the Emojii keyboard, so I added
it to the keyboard options in the Simulator, then ran my app - whch
promptly crashed on first char entry. So I tried entering a character in
Safari, samething - app crashed.
[The code works perfectly on a device.]
I get this in the console:

Anyone know of this or a workaround?
