Thank you, Jens and Michael.

You nailed the problem correctly.

I quit doing C++ about 7 years ago.  After doing it part time for 5 years, I realized that C++ was still smarter than me, and I was never going to learn enough of its tricks to be proficient.  I remember just enough of it to be dangerous.
