Hi Keith,
In Xcode 4 you can choose to open as many assistant editors as you can fit in the current tab, and you can also choose to put the assistant editor(s) either to the right or below the primary editor. What you cannot do is create "single file splits" (like you could in earlier versions of Xcode), or open more than one primary editor per tab.

I see that I can open a second assistant pane, a vertical split from the original pane, pretty easily, and I see that the "plus" button adds new panes, but I always end up with an arrangement consisting of the original pane in the left half of the window and all subsequent panes split vertically in the right half of the window. Is there any way to vertically split the left pane...or more generally is there a way to divide *any* pane in *either* direction (horizontal or vertical)? This was a piece of cake in CodeWarrior and is still super easy in Eclipse (and was apparently also feasible in previous versions of Xcode although I must admit I did not discover the secret modifier key for horizontal divisions until very very late).
