This stymied me too, but the solution is in the menu bar: View -> Assistant Editor -> Assistant Editors on Bottom.

This is a very rigid and somewhat convoluted approach to what should be a simple problem: arbitrarily splitting any code viewing pane either horizontally or vertically.

From a UI standpoint, clicking on a "tuxedo" icon would not have been my first guess. And I always see the "diff" editor next to it as a smoking pipe. Every time I see the 2 icons next to each other, I think of something like a "British Men's Club. We serve brandy in snifters."

Looking forward to Xcode 5, "now with fewer tuxedos!" ;-)
