I seem to be having a lot of trouble with this as well right now.

Go into the Organizer, the Projects tab, find your project on the left, and then in the main view there's a tiny Delete button next to the path field for the Derived Data.

Shouldn't be any more painful than deleting the Xcode app and running the 4.2 installer.
