Thanks - clang (is that what you mean by LLVM - Apple seems to use the names interchangeably ?) seems to behave correctly with this test case, but unfortunately fails in other areas (it won't compile code that both gcc-4.2 and llvm-gcc-4.2 are quite happy with).
I'll drop back to gcc-4.2 anyway, as it sounds like llvm-gcc-4.2 is unlikely to be updated.
