What will help you most is TN2250, "iOS Code Signing Setup, Process, and Troubleshooting." It's in the Documentation organizer.
My first guess is that you have not installed any signing identities (open Keychain Access, select "Certificates," and search for "iPhone"). You might not have a Team Provisioning Profile (for development builds), an ad-hoc distribution profile for the app (for beta builds), or an App Store distribution profile.
You can get all of these through your iOS Developer Program membership. You can get most of the way by selecting Provisioning Profiles in the Devices organizer, and clicking Refresh. Enter your developer-program credentials, and you should be set up in a couple of minutes.
(If you tinker with certificates in Keychain Access, Xcode won't notice the change. You'll have to quit and restart Xcode.)
