For me, there was actually a compelling reason to delete (or at least rename) it. I use a fair few things that build from the command line, and it's not altogether uncommon for those build scripts to contain hardcoded paths pointing into /Developer. If there's an old version of the tools and SDKs sitting under there, the scripts can appear to succeed now then break later in hard-to-troubleshoot ways when used in combination with things built against new SDKs. If you delete or rename /Developer, anything that's hardcoded to use that will break earlier and in such a way that it's easier to see what you need to fix.
