Double-click the file in the project navigator to open it in its own window. Then download one of the various window tiling apps so that you can easily put two such windows next to one another. (You're best off doing this with your new windows, rather than the main one, because the toolbar limits how narrow the main window can be.)

It's still not brilliant, but it (almost) works well enough for me...
