Thanks Mikkel for the response.

It appears my system shows symptoms of bad sectors on the disk (the system increasingly stalls, and kernel IO errors).
Guess, the disk is going to die. I'm trying to make a disk clone on a backup disk, and later try to recover from Time Machine on a new disk.

Any tips for this process are welcome :)
