Just an FYI, that Mac OS today ships with GateKeeper which defaults to only allowing Mac Apps that are distributed through the App Store to be allowed to be run. Though this setting is easily changed through the Security & Privacy System Preference panel (if you are allowed to change it), it would be wise to do a google search and see how other professional developers go about distributing their Mac OS apps and whether this setting matters for their install base or not.
Think about what your target market/audience is and how they would get the apps and if Gatekeeper would matter.
I'm sure other think that this info would be already listed in many places on the Internet and easily located through a Google search.

I don't really want to pay all that money to submit stuff to the app store unless my programs get much larger or do more and I know for a fact a lot of programs for the mac are not in the app store.
