Any way to speed up completion menu?

Is there any way to shorten the time between typing the hot key and when the symbol completion menu finishes appearing? There's a variable delay that's never less than a couple hundred ms, and sometimes more than a second, and the animation (grow & bounce) takes precious time, too.
