Still Having Trouble with Certificates

Hellow,
I've got a certificate. I chose IOS distribution, since i eventually want to put stuff in the app store and after this was generated, I put it on my desktop. However when I try and run an app, I still get a certificate signing error. I can't understand what I've done wrong. I know I managed to do it just about on the other mac, but it took forever. Does the certificate file have to be in the same directory as my projects, or can it just sit on my desktop?
Thanks,
Harmony.
