I always have the Build Starts behavior show the Issue Navigator and Navigate to current log (it also does this in a tab named Build, so it doesn't take focus away from files I'm editing).

Another slightly-less-annoying-than-hovering-and-waiting would be to grab the divider on the left and widen the pane that the Issue Navigator is in.
