"Never download Xcode via the App Store".

Whoa, is that a baby I see going flying with all that bathwater?

The App Store Scenario addresses the *other* major whine about Xcode releases -- how to apply a small update to Xcode without downloading an entire .dmg.

Then there's the Voodoo Thing -- where developers who have a bad experience with one Xcode release "learn" that .dmg downloads are forever more the only "safe" way to do it.

I agree with you that the beta-to-release transition is still less than perfect in specific cases, but it's not the only consideration.

Fortunately […] the release version is available as a downloadable dmg by […]. Yes you'll have to download it all over again.

Or, drag your current Xcode to the trash, empty the trash, and download Xcode [all over again] from the App Store. I'm not sure what the difference is.
