It's absolutely false that you need a separate machine for different versions of Xcode. Xcode 4.6 and Xcode 5 can co-exist happily in the same Applications folder.
The wrinkle is that if you install Xcode 5 from the Mac App Store, it will update your existing Xcode 4.6 bundle, which isn't what you want in this case. The easiest solution is simply to squirrel 4.6 away somewhere (e.g zip it) before getting 5 from the store. When 5 is installed, just restore the saved 4.6 to Applications under a different name.
Things get a bit messier if you want to use an older Xcode with the current one (say, 4.3 and 5), because they require different versions of Mac OS X. In that case, you're going to need separate startup volumes, though not necessarily separate machines.
